Hibiscus drifts along in days of Summer,
Riding the kayak, Emma and I float away.
Today feels brighter― more alive than ever,
It's day one, on a fresh New Year's Day.

Isn't it amazing what we do for fun,
Me and you there's much we can do.
Good wishes now New Year has begun,
It's the first month in '26-- woohoo!!!

I meant to be wise, but I tripped on my tries,
The egret flew up with a look so severe,
Now I’m philosophising with mud on my thighs.
As if to say, “Mate… you’re not paddling here.”

The sun climbs up and the mischief’s begun,
Creeks whisper secrets to those passing through.
Kayaks glide easy where the wild birds run,
A brand‑new year awaits for Emma, me and you.

Have you ever found something so precious and rare,
Every pebble makes you smile.
Special moments are anywhere, everywhere,
It's a magic moment, for a while.

We stopped to check the kayak out,
I heard a sound like a squeaky wheel.
We both heard it without a doubt,
Something underwater clung to the keel.

It suddenly appeared with this incessant squeak,
As infuriating as a rusted trolley.
Then what I saw had me laughing all week,
A Cranky yabby with a WD-40 deficiency.

Here's a job which took me a while,
A prototype built for poking and prying.
Mapping the logic, the flow, the style,
So when I ran with it― deeply satisfying.

In the darkness, a Koel wants to sing,
Each wave to shore becomes whitewash.
Pretty soon now, will a new day begin,
Tallebudgera sleeps, it’s the 4 a.m. hush.

So many things turned over in my mind,
I limp as I stroll early morn.
Alone, I look out to sea to unwind,
In wait for the new day's dawn.

The answer I need is nowhere to find,
Until the sun comes along― at least.
Awkwardly, I watch it beam through the cloud,
Then I noticed both shoes are on the wrong feet!

An hour to go before morning has broken,
Surfers’ coastline holds its breath for the sun.
Summertime sleepers have yet to be woken,
Once it arrives― a new beginning has begun.

Quiet as breath, the light spilled into view,
A golden ball lit enough so you can see.
The rain's holding off for me and for you,
What a great Australia Day it will be!

Emma is happy― her dad really cares,
She's taken places she'll ne'er forget.
Our customised kayak gets a couple o’ stares,
On Australia day― it's simply the best!
